Curriculum Fun

The past few weeks have mostly been filled with language arts and math, but we managed to squeeze in some fun, too.

Story of the World is teaching ancient history and we made salt dough Egyptian writings then baked it to set it.

Before baking....

Translating the code.....

Here is cuneiform paintings on scrolls, the other writings in that area at the time.

And, playing with the leftover dough... we present roasting weiners over the campfire!

Science is still birds, but Squirrel asked to learn about the body, so we did a random lesson on taste and smell.

Brave girl letting mama swab her down with unknown flavors! She had to guess if what I gave her to taste was sweet, salty, sour, bitter or savory.

In other news, we found  THE most awesomest app for Squirrel! She loves to draw comics but gets really mad at her artistic skills and puts the kebosh on her own creativity. I found Comicker on the Google play store. It comes with backgrounds and characters galore and she only has to pick them out and add her own storyline.

She is excited to get to create like this!

First Day of Learning

Monday was our official start of school. I think Squirrel is enjoying no pigtails and fancy clothes. That's not her style anyway. I'm trying a new tradition with the signage. Maybe do another at the end of the year, too.

We are working on science through Apologia's Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day and taking our time through the lessons the past month. Each lesson is meant to last about two weeks and that's  about what we are doing. Below is part of lesson 2 in the awesome student workbooks that work alongside the text. This is her bird map, of all the bird's scientific parts of his body.

This is the two bird feeders we made and put in our toddler trees, still trying to take off growing for the past 3 years. Ack. The left is a suet block we bought and the right feeder is a bottle feeder we made and filled with wild bird seed for native Texas birds. Not too much activity yet, but the temps are 101 and then some around here lately.

Our little Squirrel bird watcher.

And bonus, for mom. I came home from work Monday to find her deep into her self-created assignment writing about the world's  first writings. We are studying ancient history! AnD she really enjoyed making cave drawings of her own. But I was super proud to see her diving deeper into what we are learning!

She didn't even pay attention to dinner until she finished.
