</div>
We've been busy curriculum shopping again recently. I believe that I've bore the child with the most difficult ability to satisfy her learning style. She's a YouTube/ Minecraft/ DIY with a screen kid I've ever met.<br />
<br />
Alas, we'll get there yet. At the moment, we're weeks deep into Time4Learning, a full online curriculum that she's doing great at. I've heard pros and cons to this. What I love is that it's all video learning with quizzes and practice. I love that it has its own Facebook community for parents. And there I've met an enormous amount of parents who've had their children do T4L for years, even graduating them on this curriculum. I'm in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
On a fun learning note, I've heard great things about <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Snap-Circuits-Beginner-Electronic-Discovery/dp/B011M0XXXM/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1460429659&sr=1-1&keywords=snap+circuits+beginner" target="_blank">Snap Circuits</a>! These are like Lego on crack because you snap-snap-snap, and boom, lights and fans start whipping around. It teaches children about electricity and what a complete circuit is. These are things that never "clicked" for me learning it briefly in school.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIquBLwq8m2K2LsrBot_4J6VCk5yukpv6qkna5b-6LOVrqMT26FsEiITmmR2J7_mYI8rlzrROQP_Y-0sFFeXaMT8gBFRgXSEB9wnvER4RQBhCxAYlze-UhP3QeyKHtFbtOFfBF6SIKhocR/s1600/20160408_170456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIquBLwq8m2K2LsrBot_4J6VCk5yukpv6qkna5b-6LOVrqMT26FsEiITmmR2J7_mYI8rlzrROQP_Y-0sFFeXaMT8gBFRgXSEB9wnvER4RQBhCxAYlze-UhP3QeyKHtFbtOFfBF6SIKhocR/s640/20160408_170456.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After circuit ONE, look at this face... who doesn't love to make a kid do that? Only unicorns and a carnival could make her do this otherwise.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRtuByJVxZreII2hsEMRpd0sti3RnOZUSfrATdmzGoy7iRkIW_x13PIar6REepSoDS-A7qrELAnA2K3XWCKoq-kJZ-NykCP0h5DjkLsjc9HCVLm8_0jOkRqEHjZ_r2jU3lVqKGs-LyPF94/s1600/20160410_153958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRtuByJVxZreII2hsEMRpd0sti3RnOZUSfrATdmzGoy7iRkIW_x13PIar6REepSoDS-A7qrELAnA2K3XWCKoq-kJZ-NykCP0h5DjkLsjc9HCVLm8_0jOkRqEHjZ_r2jU3lVqKGs-LyPF94/s640/20160410_153958.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are 21 different circuits to complete in the beginner kit. Many are similar with just a few flips of a switch or a fan in a different direction brings alternate outcomes. I love it. She loved it more.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seriously? You'd think Santa just slid down the chimney when that egg lit up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She doesn't even realize she's learning too much. She just knows it's fun and that if she fiddles with the circuits, she makes things happen. That's STEM right there.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_qeoeAU90AeTrXaIWY5Gap39_OyTkZdxUEuNrGQCwjihc20bra0B8vw60dqidN-BQ0kk2ahyphenhyphenOZ1Yo8VuUB4ybZKy8N8c0wZpelfxHeyZ64i3KO23s-r81fAwJof1aQ2V0LFmLBMKgE_40/s1600/20160410_155150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_qeoeAU90AeTrXaIWY5Gap39_OyTkZdxUEuNrGQCwjihc20bra0B8vw60dqidN-BQ0kk2ahyphenhyphenOZ1Yo8VuUB4ybZKy8N8c0wZpelfxHeyZ64i3KO23s-r81fAwJof1aQ2V0LFmLBMKgE_40/s640/20160410_155150.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All in all, Snap Circuits are a success! We'll definitely be looking into bigger and different kits. Seeing her study the diagrams to reproduce them was worth every penny. </div>

We've had some successes and some fails with curriculum, schedules and finding what works, so I've missed a few months of blogging, but I'm going to start getting this moving more frequently. We're finding our groove. :)<br />
<br />
We've chosen to be year-round homeschoolers and take breaks when we feel like doing so throughout the year. This helps ease the strain of strict schedules to get curriculum completed and allows for more interest-led learning as life leads us that way.<br />
<br />
Squirrel gets excited about a lot of things, but it can be difficult to hone in on what is most exciting to her as a student. So far, making her own videos, cooking and science are big deals to her.<br />
<br />
If I let her, she'll make videos all day long on a cell phone or tablet left lying around. Not just any videos, though. She likes to make instructional videos, from "unboxing" videos to DIY everything in our house. Even when a camera is not pointed at her, she talks her way through teaching each and every one of YOU how to sweep, make a cup of Kool-Aid, or wash a dog in the backyard. It's what she's drawn to.<br />
<br />
So, I have to try to direct her in an appropriate direction with her passions. Instead of letting her stare at YouTube all day long, I've let her create her own videos, and I've uploaded a few to a private channel. She's working me over to get me to make all her videos public. I'm not quite ready for that yet.<br />
<br />
Her latest achievement is making homemade dog treats. Actually, they're partially homemade. Semi-homemade is the coined term, I believe.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0ef5LRzaqda6F_uoGgwnN-KGAcCDcY0oqznnl3C1PttLXF09YsYIuN0MXenr5uhKvJL1_aAqfFHckZAVLBTUyJwJGGf_BPR3K3HKM22cnup4BWr7trBjZLTJFqZX-YADQvNmxrlyPmws/s1600/dogbonebowl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0ef5LRzaqda6F_uoGgwnN-KGAcCDcY0oqznnl3C1PttLXF09YsYIuN0MXenr5uhKvJL1_aAqfFHckZAVLBTUyJwJGGf_BPR3K3HKM22cnup4BWr7trBjZLTJFqZX-YADQvNmxrlyPmws/s640/dogbonebowl.jpg" width="352" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Squirrel gives you Milk Bone Sandwiches... take two Milk Bones and sandwich them together with a sticky, nutty layer of PB. I must say, the dogs are fans!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbehoxb0zHGDICELJvymwdVRasog0mMUYrojXd6LKEnB6u01UHffY8wF1_jS3hQK4mcvtrIEezvxQXrmxHsgKVANh5OTwPNi9lY0RU50VlNEK_VQfNCJBjrEVfCeZQVqArzZEqOWovYlFt/s1600/dogbones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbehoxb0zHGDICELJvymwdVRasog0mMUYrojXd6LKEnB6u01UHffY8wF1_jS3hQK4mcvtrIEezvxQXrmxHsgKVANh5OTwPNi9lY0RU50VlNEK_VQfNCJBjrEVfCeZQVqArzZEqOWovYlFt/s640/dogbones.jpg" width="352" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, my goal as we move into 3rd grade work and ideas, is to allow the Squirrel more freedom in her learning. Some things she finds boring, and I understand. As I'm working FT currently, I try to give her things to rouse her curiosity, but some things just aren't going to be crazy exciting. Math. She's good at it, but it isn't too exciting. I'll be exploring the web and getting some of my own creative ideas flowing to bring more excitement to our learning overall.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And, I'm happy for warmer weather, so we can cruise back to doing nature walks after our Saturday soccer games. Good times ahead!</div>
<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
Fruit Loops and Ixl math problems in the mornings. We subscribed to this at her insistance, but she is finding it isn't to her liking. I'm still thinking Teaching Textbooks when summer rolls around.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Science is the absolute favorite though. We focus primarily with Apologia Flying Creatures, but we are finding ourselves unafraid of wandering off on a new subject. I found a great book at Five Below full of experiments. We chose a few weather experiments to work on. First, freezing water. Here, our cupful of ice. We checked our water in 30 minute increments to see how long for it to freeze (Squirrel fingers poking at the water slows the process a bit😂). </div>

Monday was our official start of school. I think Squirrel is enjoying no pigtails and fancy clothes. That's not her style anyway. I'm trying a new tradition with the signage. Maybe do another at the end of the year, too.</div>

I've decided on Squirrel's gymnastics day, that we will have as an off day. She is only required to do some free reading. She comes home so exhausting that it's pretty pointless to get her to concentrate on anything. <br />
<br />
Today at lunch check-in, she was having a mini-meltdown. It happens. She had no interest in learning, and we sat and had lunch, giggled and started on her writing/ grammar daily work. She says, "I've never had a teacher let me eat GRILLED cheese while doing my work. This is Awesome, mom." <br />
<br />
Life of Fred is the math of choice this year. I researched it for a while and had/ have my reservations about it being a full-on math curriculum, but the more I read, the more relaxed I become with what it offers. <br />
<br />
I'm still supplementing with math worksheets a few times a week since I have a brain that believes you should be drilled to death to learn math facts. I'll get there... (maybe)<br />
<br />
Last night, LOF clicked for her. She asked for another chapter. Then another... before I knew it, we had done four chapters in the Apples book. And I believe the only reason it stopped was because a side-learning opportunity sparked her attention.<br />
<br />
Chapter 12 talks about the Titanic. And that was all she wrote. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3wKGkHvUzwyd4ZqbVTw4mnab2eyWA6gQM-ygW4Rl9KRzXf0F6ICi6vzEZvI_IIMj75HxaTLIOCKbvGI1IR45p-5sfpO8KI7tFZtcjw9MmlxTFKcsrEqPpLOB8kaYITZR6-lOrkG0hFM5Y/s1600/IMAG1044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="361" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3wKGkHvUzwyd4ZqbVTw4mnab2eyWA6gQM-ygW4Rl9KRzXf0F6ICi6vzEZvI_IIMj75HxaTLIOCKbvGI1IR45p-5sfpO8KI7tFZtcjw9MmlxTFKcsrEqPpLOB8kaYITZR6-lOrkG0hFM5Y/s640/IMAG1044.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before the night was done, we'd watched a number of Titanic Youtube videos on the living room television (courtesy of Daddy Squirrel) and we all have a family date to watch Titanic in 3D this weekend. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are also some great short and sweet learning videos on Youtube about the Titanic. We learned a bit about the way the boat sunk, about the lives lost, the rooms and areas of the boat never destroyed when she sunk. Squirrel was extremely interested to know that so many lives were lost. She was sad for awhile, but we talked about the way history includes these massive and momentous sad occasions for us all to learn from and grow. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She liked that answer. And we read a few chapters of her new favorite book series, Clarice Bean, so she could get her mind off of the sadness that happened. Our first rabbit hole was traveled together that took us from math to science and history. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's what it's all about. Learning for enjoyment and interest. To remember.</div>

True schooling and learning a little each day. I can see where struggles will arise, especially since I work outside of the home. Currently, I leave a few assignments for her with a sticky note of what to work on.<br />
<br />
Daddy Squirrel keeps an eye on her and checks on her during the morning, makes sure she does her morning routines and starts work I leave for her. Then I come home at lunch and see what she has completed or got stuck on.<br />
<br />
In the evenings, we do bigger lessons and I read a few chapters before bed. Our first big lessons were history, which she isn't crazy about but she found interest in with the workbook projects.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVecrVB-AT3HPBae-6yYdBx30gvYbtmZB0Puj1nXWu0_hvamyRjMejeeZgDwqGsFIyKWEbkJAkxYFTCK1ZEJtLlVJhRU51HTaapxXi4SffN8hAEXhXJz3BpwGANOpz42tKhXnxa86JCJU_/s1600/IMAG0993_1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVecrVB-AT3HPBae-6yYdBx30gvYbtmZB0Puj1nXWu0_hvamyRjMejeeZgDwqGsFIyKWEbkJAkxYFTCK1ZEJtLlVJhRU51HTaapxXi4SffN8hAEXhXJz3BpwGANOpz42tKhXnxa86JCJU_/s320/IMAG0993_1_1.jpg" width="278" /></a></div>
Today was a big homeschool day for us, though. Squirrel is raring to go! We did a math lesson in Life of Fred last night and this morning. I started her with Apples and judging from the first few lessons, we should get through the first book quickly. I was pretty unsure of where she stands in math. She knows basic concepts: adding, substracting, most time on a clock, and what currency is worth (pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes). <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I figured we would either learn something new in the book or rush through it while enjoying it for a few months. Either way, it's a nice way to learn concepts a new way. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today, we spent the morning at the library, then decided on a nature walk. I wish we had started earlier in the morning because we got pretty hot, but Squirrel kept wanting more lessons, so who am I to deny that?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We went to our local hike and bike trail, which we have been on but never really explored from a science and nature point of view but only biked on. I fixed up a nature walk folder and out we went. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxSF9vghp6fr4emVx3gWdkdwmk1wc5VRqlYxEBwpMbGgVPxc56WhPDR9k3xqwtb4Aa3thweAgNDAjzFX_dl3mf29F911EJuFEO4LAeIKaN_GeFbGdeMZd2yvyh1W8pWjZkop1PHeO-enbI/s1600/IMAG1012-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxSF9vghp6fr4emVx3gWdkdwmk1wc5VRqlYxEBwpMbGgVPxc56WhPDR9k3xqwtb4Aa3thweAgNDAjzFX_dl3mf29F911EJuFEO4LAeIKaN_GeFbGdeMZd2yvyh1W8pWjZkop1PHeO-enbI/s320/IMAG1012-1.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Inside the folder, I stapled a baggie with a few crayons to use for rubbings, and a few more to collect things we find along the way. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eOdeB3UpyNr9Y8P80GEGSbKDxNtHoVW4HYww4nuJhBW7nuoUtEs7peuuMFo7RU8pCK-fzIcLV6M25VKwZTPQQdOWPG83XdLGiftKJM_LNgfxuTMJtGQrIHgH-mTMZknBMQ8Mnjwv1HmR/s1600/IMAG1013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eOdeB3UpyNr9Y8P80GEGSbKDxNtHoVW4HYww4nuJhBW7nuoUtEs7peuuMFo7RU8pCK-fzIcLV6M25VKwZTPQQdOWPG83XdLGiftKJM_LNgfxuTMJtGQrIHgH-mTMZknBMQ8Mnjwv1HmR/s320/IMAG1013.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We found lots of interesting things along the way. Some of the roots of the trees look like stalagmites growing up from the ground! We sat awhile looking and listening. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we walked along, we found a mother goose and her four sweet, fuzzy babies. The fourth one was hiding under mommy's tail feathers. Super cute little ones. Squirrel even gave them names: Hermee, Lurmee, Kermee, and Hermee Jr.</div>

We tried not to disrupt them, and they didn't seem to mind us being around. But we didn't get super close anyway. Behind them, about 15 feet away and near the water's edge, we found an awesome nest of goose eggs in the cradle of the tree's roots. I have never even seen this! We were pretty much in awe of nature and God, while we watched discoveries unfold around us. </div>

When we got home Squirrel narrated some writing while I filled in some details in the notebook of our trip. The best part of our walk was the end when I spotted a hummingbird zooming around some nectar filled flowers. So much fun!</div>

This year is the first year for us to teach the Squirrel at home and scouring the Web is my new moonlighting job. So, without further ado.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdMd0NPGKx0GlXJR3uHuHdVBO4yMx0omCDg9X4uYsjG-R-seeQtTCEmLuLRLT9soFy974p62w78lBD_w6Rri0_bb0zB2oFAxdOmRw6_lHN7ygs0OYPq66o6QpDQlLA7ehV9-rVYRUv8SWe/s1600/20150628_211517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdMd0NPGKx0GlXJR3uHuHdVBO4yMx0omCDg9X4uYsjG-R-seeQtTCEmLuLRLT9soFy974p62w78lBD_w6Rri0_bb0zB2oFAxdOmRw6_lHN7ygs0OYPq66o6QpDQlLA7ehV9-rVYRUv8SWe/s320/20150628_211517.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I plan to work ELA from Explode the Code books 3, 3 1/2, 4 and 4 1/2. I also ordered the teacher guide just to ensure I know the drill with these. After receiving them, they look fairly self-explanatory.<br />
<br />
Story Elements and Spectrum Reading workbooks will accentuate other elements not covered in the code books.<br />
<br />
Not pictured is Handwriting Without Tears printing book to improve her current writing abilities. Squirrel wants to learn cursive, but we agreed to improve the printing first, so that is the current summer project. This is a great book and curriculum for teaching writing.<br />
<br />
I've ordered a variety of chapter books, such as Pippi Longstocking and The Boxcar Children, as well as utilizing the library for more books and classic literature.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSdEKPXCe7NBLAaopuI9_GIvB8vhpuUMFqoc8dfMi2Lr9xM9ohLO4POJsGzc3JgXwe6rKE05Ecv3fep1ZzT2jEhsBJh6llnHSV9vpR3OuiYVjHEbi5_aOhS00viY7_etrHScvkev8W6_Pk/s1600/20150628_211444.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSdEKPXCe7NBLAaopuI9_GIvB8vhpuUMFqoc8dfMi2Lr9xM9ohLO4POJsGzc3JgXwe6rKE05Ecv3fep1ZzT2jEhsBJh6llnHSV9vpR3OuiYVjHEbi5_aOhS00viY7_etrHScvkev8W6_Pk/s320/20150628_211444.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For History, we are starting with A Story of the World I, book and workbook. For science, Squirell's favorite subject, Exploring Creation with Flying Animals of the Fifth Day. This one is impressive and I'm loving the reading as much as the workbook.<br />
<br />
Mathematics is Life of Fred, the first two volumes. I plan to provide worksheets and handwritten problems for her based on the chapter. I like it, but I'm not sure it's for us yet. I'll let the Squirrel lead the way. My 2nd choice was Teaching Textbooks. I definitely want that program for next year.<br />
<br />
For art, I am going to teach some chalk pastel art, from<a href="http://www.southernhodgepodge.com/"> Southern Hodgepodge</a>. This looks like lots of fun for us and her. This as well as other artsy projects that tie in with the other subjects.<br />
<br />
Trying to stay basic, make it fun, and avoid going overboard! Let the fun begin.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I Google everything I can think of. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have a question--- Google</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Who's that actor? Google </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I use The Google like a good little soldier. </div>
<br />
After making the decision to home school, I wondered how I could work full time and fit it all in. Now I'm wrapping my head around the concept of year round homeschooling. And I continue to Google about it because I'm not finding my confidence strong enough... but it's coming. I put myself through grad school as a single mom with 2 kids and a full-time job. I can do this.<br />
<br />
I have read various things about young children-elementary children-- not needing but an hour or two a day of schooling. And we don't have to do it 5 days a week M-F. We can be non-traditional. We don't have to do it the way everyone pictures it to be. I think we will certainly spend more time than that for awhile to gather momentum and a rhythm that will certainly be easy to break. But one that we can jump back on board with quickly. <br />
<br />
It will give us time to be ill, have breaks, and get away. So that's where we start on the first Monday in August.<br />
<br />
Otherwise, I'm overwhelmed and excited about curriculum (thanks Google). There are ridiculous amounts of options at every dollar level out there. I so much want to be the mom that makes lapbooks and monster-sized fun projects. But alas, that's not what God is granting me with time-wise. We will do fine without this being a major player in our homeschool world. <br />
<br />
I've purchased about everything I plan to for Squirrel's 2nd Grade year (so I say). <br />
<br />
Next time I'll post our choices for everything. It will create a nice rabbit hole to travel down throughout the next year of my thoughts on curriculum choices. Even after purchases and decisions, I continue to find more ideas I'd like to try, like unit studies. <br />
<br />
We will see! I'm excited about so much of it, and so is Squirrel when I show her all the things we will all be learning together.<br />
<br />
And that's what matters.<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14198695288659933519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6338977159651480710.post-38123557832006629102015-06-10T20:12:00.000-07:002015-06-10T20:12:00.223-07:00ChoicesSchooling children is an ongoing process until they reach adulthood. The options we have and provide for them change through the years. Squirrel is our 7 year old girl that we will begin homeschooling this fall.<br />
<br />
She's been attending a Christian school for the past 3 years. For the most part, we've been satisfied with her education, with some small school glitches along the way. It almost felt like she was attending a large co-op every day. Very Sunday School in feel but learning a lot of subjects. I love that they taught daily about the Bible and God, praying and singing, and studying verses and the Word.<br />
<br />
Kindergarten found a bully for Squirrel. A little boy who picked and teased relentlessly. We went to the teacher multiple times and found it barely improved by year's end.<br />
<br />
This year, the same, only with a little girl who was mean. Just. Mean. Telling Squirrel she should die. She wanted her to die. Told her how she could make her die. The Good Son kind of things were happening. Squirrel was afraid. She didn't want to "fight" back. She said that being mean in return is not what Jesus said to do. Bless her heart.<br />
<br />
I went to teacher. Twice. I inquired on teachings about bullying. I heard in return that bullying is not something specifically taught, as they teach to be like Jesus and treat each other well. Understandable. Only we have a bully not doing the right thing and kids need to learn to stick up for one another and recognize a bully. Just that extra step. School and parent meetings later, she finally stopped and befriended Squirrel instead. Success.<br />
<br />
Squirrel kept asking me to put her in public school instead. That she'd rather deal with those kids. I started feeling God tug at my heart. For months now. It hasn't gone away.<br />
<br />
So I started looking for work at home jobs, thinking maybe by 3rd grade. I'll start her at home then. God keeps asking why wait? So, why wait. Hubby works at home. We'll do lessons in the afternoon. She can do some workbooks and reading during the day. He can help keep her on task, and I'll check on her at lunch.<br />
<br />
Problem solved.<br />
<br />
I'm right where I need to be. We... are right where we need to be.<br />
<br />
So here. We. Go!<br />
<br />

The more I delve and read and become obsessed with why others homeschool, I feel the tug of God in my heart that this is the choice He is showing me for our family.<br />
<br />
We aren't strangers to homeschool, but my first dive into it was strong and fast and a crash course in the realities of how it's done. Our oldest, now 19, had difficulties in public school in high school. Trying hard to get there and finish early, she was one credit shy of graduating her Junior year. She worked with counselors to test out at the community college and take a summer course there for her 9th credit. Everyone gave wrong dates and were unsupportive, leaving my hard worker frustrated and angry with the injustice of hard work falling apart before her eyes. She turned and begged... yes, begged me to homeschool her the last year.<br />
<br />
"Mom, you're smart. You did college. Help me. Aunt Karen will show you." My brother and his family have done this way of home learning for over a decade-- and at first, I scoffed at their thinking. For a long time. To myself. Now here was my beloved daughter reaching to me for hope for her own dreams and future. How could I just walk the other direction?<br />
<br />
So, I jumped in head first. Got tons of advice from my sister-in-law. Went to a convention. Joined HSLDA. Bought books at Half Price Books. Wrote curriculum plans. Wrote letters to withdraw her from school. Learned to make a transcript.<br />
<br />
And before I could blink it was over. I am not sure I did it right... but I did it! We did it. I feel in my heart it was the right thing. And my wise daughter says, "See, mama. It works. I have great ideas sometimes."<br />
<br />
Yes.<br />
<br />
And now, I start again, 3 years later, as we School a Squirrel.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14198695288659933519noreply@blogger.com0
